PONTIKIS Athina Karathanos Pontikis age 93 of Las Vegas, NV and formerly of Trumbull, entered into eternal peace after a brief illness in Summerlin Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas on April 8, 2016. Born in a small village in Greece, she and her beloved husband moved to Edessa, Greece soon after their village was burned during World War II. Athina had a wonderful life in Greece as a loving wife and mother to her two sons. Upon moving to the United States in 1971, Athina entered the workforce for six years until her first grandchild was born and then continued devoting her life to her family. She loved to sew, crochet, cook and maintain an impeccable home. Working tirelessly in the kitchen, her cooking skills were enjoyed at every family meal and holiday feast. Company frequently filled her home and there was always plenty of spanakopita on-hand for all to enjoy. Although having command of three languages, English was not her strong suit, but mastered the words "thank you". Athina's life was not only defined by her steadfast devotion to her family, but also by her faith. As an active member of St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church, joining the members for coffee was a regular event and of course bingo. Her husband Konstantinos, predeceased her in 1999. They shared a wonderful marriage together for nearly 53 years. He was a men's clothing designer and designed all of her suits, dresses and coats, as he did for his entire family. Athina was always beautifully dressed, thanks to Kosta. She is survived by her son Viorelis and his wife Margaret of Las Vegas, NV and her son Nikolaos of Trumbull. Also surviving Athina are her cherished grandchildren, Martha Pontikis of Stratford, Athena Martinez and her husband Jeremiah of New Hartford, NY and Konstantinos Pontikis of Trumbull. She was also the proud great-grandmother to Olivia and Niko Martinez of New Hartford, NY and Anastasia Pontikis of Stratford. Having so many other members of her extended family in the United States, was one of her greatest joys. Athina often visited her family left behind in Greece and always lovingly remembered her four brothers and two sisters that predeceased her.
