Irene Szalan Moran, Milford, passed away peacefully at home on July 17, 2014. Born March 26, 1930 in Bridgeport, Irene was predeceased by her parents Mary and John Szalan, brother Edward, daughter, Colleen Moran Taylor and granddaughter, Renay Troia, infant children Matthew and Anne and father of her children, Thomas J. Moran Jr. Irene leaves six beloved children, Mary Beth (Keith) Nelsen, Patty (Patricia) Moran, Peggy (Patrick) Freeman, Tom Moran, Michael (Kate) Moran and Susan Kovacs, grandchildren Matthew (Heidi) Troia, Michael Moran-Kay, Morgan (Laurel) Wolff, Kelly, Christian and Seth Nelsen, Mary Freeman, Richie, Nicholas and Emily Kovacs, great-granddaughter Abigail Rose Moran-Kay, sister-in-law, Ann Szalan and nieces and nephew John Szalan, Denise Walsh and Laura Brothers. Retired from her job working with special needs children for the State of CT, Irene enjoyed making quilts for her family, creative writing, reading, playing Scrabble and gardening. A prize-winning playwright, she and her husband wrote and produced many popular plays for St. Lawrence Church in Huntington while raising their children. She loved her home near the Milford beach and throwing annual lobster bashes for family and friends. Most of all, she loved being the mother of seven children. The family would to thank her aide and friend Rachel Smith, special friend and neighbor Christine Schreiber and all the supportive staff at Constellation Hospice. A Funeral Mass in Celebration of Irene's Life will be held at 9:30 AM on Monday, July 21, 2014 DIRECTLY at St. Gabriel Church, 26 Broadway, Milford. Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery, 2205 Stratford Ave, Stratford. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in her name to your favorite charity.
