John Edward Shamer, Sr., age 79, of Oxford, formerly of Ansonia and Shelton, the beloved husband of the late Patricia Knight Shamer, entered into rest on Monday, March 14, 2011 at Bridgeport Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Westminster, MD on October 23, 1931, son of the late William R. and Elizabeth Study Shamer. John was the owner of the former Shamer and Sons Well Drilling Company of Shelton and had been associated previously with the William Knight Well Drilling Company. He had attended the First United Methodist Church of Shelton. John was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War and held the rank of Corporal. He was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal, two Bronze Stars, the United Nations Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. John was a resident of Oxford for four years, having moved from Ansonia. He loved to socialize with family and friends, loved to watch his cherished grandchildren, was a Babe Ruth baseball coach in Shelton for 3 years and was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan. John will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. His loving family includes his caring sons John Shamer, Jr and his wife Cara of Winter Springs, FL, Dean Shamer and his wife Donna of Naugatuck, Karl Shamer and his wife Marie of Oxford and Paul Shamer and his wife Katikana of Allentown, PA, his loving sister Joan Cornell of Manchester, MD, his eight cherished grandchildren Ted Gustafson, Karl Gustafson, Karlie-Patricia Shamer, Kyle Shamer, Ryan Shamer, Brett Shamer, Alayna Shamer and Jody Shamer and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Patricia and his beloved brother William R. Shamer. A Funeral Service in Celebration of John's life will be held on Friday, March 18, 2011 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of the Miller-Ward Funeral Home, 260 Bank Street (RT. 67, opposite Klarides Village) Seymour with the Rev. Heather Sinclair, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Shelton, officiating. Entombment in the Garden Mausoleum at Mount St. Peter Cemetery, Derby with full military honors accorded. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to (The John E. Shamer Memorial Fund) for the benefit of the grandchildren's educational fund, care of the funeral director.
