Joseph Franklin O'Brien Sr. (age 97) died on May 8, 2012 at Huntington , N.Y. A long time resident of Seymour, CT., Mr. O'Brien enlisted in the Navy at the outset of World War II and served aboard two separate LST vessels in the Pacific. During the war, while home on leave he married his late wife, Virginia Coan O'Brien. He was a devout communicant and usher of Saint Augustine Church of Seymour. Mr. O'Brien was very active in local politics, serving first on the board of tax assessors, and later as a town selectman. He served a record number of years on the board of education, many as chairman, and was honored upon his retirement with the naming of the school on Skokorat St., the "Joseph F. O'Brien Learning Center at Chatfield School." He is survived by his sons, Joseph F. O'Brien Jr. (Simone) and Robert D. O'Brien (Marie), two grandsons, Timothy and Thomas, one granddaughter, Catherine and one great-grandson, Ryan and three nieces. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated "directly" at 10:00AM on Saturday May 12, 2012 at St. Augustine Church, 35 Washington Avenue, Seymour, CT. Interment with full military honors being accorded at Riverside Cemetery, Shelton, CT, following the Mass. Friends and relatives may call at the Miller Ward Funeral Home 260 Bank St., "Rt. 67" Seymour, CT on Friday May 11, 2012 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
