Lynn E. Kowal, age 62, of Seymour, CT entered into eternal rest, peacefully on Sunday, June 22, 2014. She was surrounded by her two loving and devoted daughters and granddaughter. Lynn was born in Milford, CT on October 20, 1951, daughter of the late John McDonald and Virginia McDonald. She was predeceased by brother, John "Jack" McDonald. Her family was always first and foremost in her heart. She is survived by daughter, Christine G. Kowal and companion John C. D'Antona Jr., daughter, Jennifer L. Kowal, granddaughter, Samantha L. Kowal, sister, Beverly A."Bambi" McDonald Crepeau and her husband Kenneth Crepeau, nieces: Samara Gerarde, Katherine A. "Katie" Gerarde and Monica L. Gerarde, nephew Donald Joseph "D.J." Gerarde, uncle, Ivan Foster, and dutiful former husband, Samuel R. Kowal. She is also survived by eleven cousins. Mrs. Kowal, born and raised in Milford, CT, was a graduate of Jonathan Law High School. While raising a family, Lynn started her medical practice management career as an ER Secretary and Medical Assistant at Griffin Hospital in Derby, CT. In her spare time she volunteered, and was a Troop Leader for the Girl Scouts of America. She continued on to become a Claims Analyst, educating corporate analysts on the principals of correct medical coding. Lynn studied incessantly to further her medical practice knowledge, later delving into, medical coding and billing, consulting for Connecticut physicians practicing internal medicine, orthopedics, pediatrics, pulmonary and gastroenterology, podiatry, geriatrics, endocrinology, and anesthesiology; and designed and developed a fully accredited, state of the art, sleep center in Fairfield, CT. Lynn later became a Practice Administrator for an endocrine and diabetes center, and ultimately an Executive Director of a physicians' association, all while concurrently teaching medical coding and billing, as an adjunct instructor and lecturer at Tunxis Community College in Bristol, CT and an adjunct instructor, lecturer, and advisor at Norwalk Community College in Norwalk, CT. She served the Norwalk Community College Advisory Board from 2003-2007. Lynn was a member of the Medical Group Management Association and a former member of the American Academy of Professional Coders. She co-founded and was the Senior Moderator of the Fairfield County Practice Manager's Group, which won recognition from the Fairfield County Medical Association, Saint Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport Hospital, and multiple other community organizations and state-wide businesses. Without reserve, Lynn freely shared valuable medical coding and billing knowledge to her peers and colleagues, and mentored many in her field. Lynn was a self-taught entrepreneur, becoming one of the most knowledgeable and respected Medical Coding and Billing Experts in the State of Connecticut. She helped with setting a precedent for overturning an experimental treatment, for patients denied by insurance carriers. Lynn was also a private consultant for several medical practices in Fairfield County. She brought Junior Achievement to Bungay Elementary School, in Seymour, CT by volunteering her time, teaching youngsters the principals and values of money management, different career options, and US geography. Lynn was also a communicant of the Church of Good Shepherd in Seymour, CT. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and spending time with her granddaughter, Samantha, and two dogs, Bailey and Chloe. A memorial gathering, in celebration of Lynn E. Kowal's life, will be held on Monday, July 28, 2014 between 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. at the Miller Ward Funeral Home, 260 Bank Street, Seymour, CT 06483. A private burial will be held at a later date.
