Michiko Peck Profile Photo

Michiko Theorna Peck, age 70, of Woodbridge, the loving wife of Stuart Peck, entered into rest peacefully on Friday, July 21, 2017 at her home. She was born on August 20, 1946 on the island of Okinawa of Japanese and Hawaiian parents. After the death of her natural mother, Michiko was given up for adoption and raised by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Fischer. After serving in the US Navy, Fischer became a diplomat for the USA and his career took him and his family all over the world. Because of this, Michiko was educated in parochial schools because her adoptive parents were of the opinion that the school curriculum was basically the same world-wide hence their daughter would receive a more balanced education. During her teen years, Michiko developed an interest in cooking, learning from a woman she called her "nanny" who happened to be Northern Italian. She has said that this was pretty much in "self-defense" because her mother was a concert pianist whose culinary skills where limited to "scrambled eggs and golden brown toast". Michiko could cook up Japanese rice, and that was the extent of her expertise insofar as Asian cooking went. But her sausage and peppers? Wow!! The family lived for a time in San Bernadino, CA and as a young woman, Michiko won the title of "Miss San Bernadino" in a local beauty pageant. She graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Pediatric nursing. Michiko did not enter the nursing profession and became an airline stewardess instead. Her career ended in a fatal plane crash in which she was on of the very few who survived. Her mother prevailed upon her to make a career change and she did so. Michiko gravitated toward New England and eventually gained employment with CMS (Connecticut Medical Service) which merged with Connecticut Blue Cross. It was while she was working at Blue Cross in North Haven that she met the man who was to become her husband of twenty-four years. Michiko was no stranger to the disease that was to eventually take her life. In her late teens she lost an eye to cancer. Then , in 1977, at the age of 31, she suffered thyroid cancer. In her early sixties, she gave up one of her kidneys to the same disease. And now, having just turned 70, she has succumbed to the effects of lung cancer. One may be inclined to think that she was fortunate to have lived as long as she did, but to her family and friends, it was no where near long enough. A Funeral Service in Celebration of Michiko's life will be held on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 11:00 am in the chapel of the Miller Ward Funeral Home, 260 Bank Street (RT. 67, across from Klarides Village) Seymour. Interment in the family plot at East Side Cemetery, Woodbridge will follow. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home from 9:00 am until the beginning of the service at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made in Michiko's memory to Compassus Hospice through the funeral home.
