Anele Rosemary(Nellie) Vaitkus Plikaitis, age 93, of Seymour, died peacefully Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Griffin Hospital in Derby. She was the wife of the late William J. Plikaitis. Nellie was born in Waterbury, CT, daughter of the late Frank and Petrone (Urban) Vaitkus. She was a graduate of Waterbury Catholic High School. In the past she had worked at Uniroyal Footwear, Naugatuck and was a retiree of Pratt & Whitney Corporation, North Haven. Nellie was a devout communicant of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church of Ansonia. She enjoyed hobbies of Knitting, crocheting and sewing. In recent years she enjoyed indentifying birds and the beauty of her flower garden and designing greeting cards. Most of all she enjoyed hearing accounts of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's lives. Nellie is survived by her son William A. Plikaitis of Palm Beach, Florida and her daughter Jane Zmuda of Seymour and four grandchildren Michael and Debbie Zmuda of Virginia; Catherine Trzaski of Seymour, Margaret Friar-Plikaitis of New York City and Luke Friar-Plikaitis of Virginia. She also leaves great-grandchildren Justin, Caitlyn, and Cassandra Trzaski, and Michael and Ryan Zmuda of Virginia; a sister Eva Carusello of Waterbury and a niece and nephews. Nellie was predeceased by her dear son-in-law Michael Peter Zmuda and her brothers John, Anthony and Stanley Vaitkus, and a sister Anna Vaitkus. Nellie is sadly missed by Julie Friar of Falls Church, Virginia and her roommate Eva Hein of Hewitt Hospital, Shelton. A funeral Service in celebration of Nellie's life will be held at 8:00 AM on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Miller Ward Funeral Home 260 Bank St. (Rte. 67) Seymour, opposite Klarides Village, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 9:00 AM at St. Anthony Church, 199 N. Main St., Ansonia, CT. Interment in the family plot at St. James Cemetery in Naugatuck, CT will follow the Mass. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Friday May 18, 2012 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorial gifts in Nellie's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
