Samuel Kowal, age 99, of Seymour, the beloved husband of the late Helen E. Gesek Kowal, entered into eternal rest peacefully at his home on Friday, July 30, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Seymour on May 23, 1911, son of the late Michael and Eva Ditcko Kowal. Sam was a communicant of the Church of the Good Shepherd and was a former communicant of St. Leo Church of Waterbury. He was a graduate of Seymour High School and received his degree in Accounting from Quinnipiac University. While serving with the United States Armed Forces, Sam also took accounting courses at the University of Minnesota in 1945. From 1930-1942, Sam worked for the Seymour Products Company, from 1942-1946, he proudly served his country and from 1946-1952, he was a Cost Accountant for the Plume and Atwood Manufacturing Company of Waterbury. He retired in 1980 as a Bank Examiner for the State of Connecticut. Formerly, Sam was employed as an accountant for the Ball and Roller Baring Company of Danbury, the HA Matthews Manufacturing Company and the Seymour Furniture Company. He was also a Notary Public and Realtor and was a member of the National Association of Cost Accountants. Sam was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II serving with the rank of Tech Sergeant. He was the recipient of the Philippians Liberation with one bronze service star, the Victory Medal of the European-African Middle Eastern Theater Camp Ribbon and the American Theater Campaign Ribbon. Sam was the oldest member of the Emil Senger Post No. 10 American Legion of Seymour, having been a member for 63 years. In 1959, he received the Distinguished Service Citation in recognition of his excellent achievements in servicing the veterans of the community. Sam was the last surviving member of the Ansonia Townies Semi-pro baseball team of the 1930's where he played second base. An avid New York Yankee fan, he loved all sports and especially enjoyed playing golf at the Hop Brook Country Club of Naugatuck where he was a member. Sam was a former member of the Knights of Columbus Aurora Council No. 53 of Seymour, a former member of the Town of Seymour Tax Review Board and a member of the Seymour Republican Town Committee. His family was always first and foremost in his heart. His loving family includes his devoted sons, Samuel R. Kowal of Seymour and Richard A. Kowal and his wife Carol of Milford, his loving sister Ann Dyson of Naugatuck, his beloved fiance/companion of 22 years Grace I. Klobedanz of Waterbury, his cherished grandchildren Christine G. Kowal, Jennifer L. Kowal, Taylor M. Sanchez and Brian R. Kowal, his caring former daughter in law Lynn E. Kowal, his cherished great grand daughter Samantha L. Kowal, and his loving six nephews and one niece. He was predeceased by his brothers Harry and Max Kowal, a step brother Mike Katz and his sister Mary Nowakowski. A Funeral Service in Celebration of Samuel's life will be held on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at 9:00 am in the Chapel of the Miller-Ward Funeral Home, 260 Bank St (RT. 67, across from Klarides Village) Seymour with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 am at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 135 Mountain Road, Seymour. Internment, with Military Honors Accorded, will follow in the family plot at St. Augustine Cemetery, Seymour. Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Monday, August 2, 2010 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd Improvement Fund, 135 Mountain Road, Seymour, CT 06483.
