Walter John O'Connell, Retired NHFD, 85 of Bethany, the beloved husband of 57 yrs. to Arlene Kane O'Connell, entered into eternal rest peacefully on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Shady Knoll Health Center, Seymour. He was born in New Haven on December 5, 1932 the son of the late Walter and Grace O'Connell . Prior to moving to Bethany 50 years ago he resided in New Haven. He served his country with pride and honor in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Walter was a Firefighter for the City of New Haven Fire Department for 30 years prior to his retirement. He also worked at Malone's Bar & Grille of New Haven. Walter enjoyed playing golf and was an avid sports enthusiast and liked attending Yale football games. For many summers he was a member of the OWENGO Club of Branford, CT. Walter will be sadly missed by his family and friends but he will remain forever in their hearts. In addition to his beloved wife Arlene, he leaves several nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by three sisters Grace, Edna and Elaine. A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 11:00 am at the family plot at Mountain Meadows Cemetery, Seymour, with Reverend Nicole Harvell, Pastor of The Immanuel Lutheran Church of Oxford officiating. There will be no calling hours. The Miller-Ward Funeral Home, 260 Bank Street (Rt. 67, across from Klarides Village) Seymour, is compassionately caring for the family.
